Hazardous waste management requires extensive information collection
and analysis and the latest technology for managing information resources. The
data and immediate response needs of emergencies are unmet, even by the online
databases some agencies have used. To address some shortcomings, the Centers
for Disease Control (CDC) plans TDB2, an expansion and improvement of the Toxicology
Data Bank (TDB). To package information more usefully, a microcomputer workstation
is being developed with features of the Chemical Substances Information Network
(CSIN) technology, such as script-mode access to databases. These developments
will help greatly in emergencies. A system has been developed by the Environmental
Testing and Certification Corp. (Edison, New Jersey) to manage environmental
data.
